This is a significant move by Uber. They are pivoting to become an auto industry service provider. The question is how broad these partnerships can be. Will Daimler want a GM version of the same service? If not, the alliance will be a problem for Uber at some point, likely when the carmakers start buying the on-demand service companies.
Effectively Uber is going to be offering a way for OEMs to provide ride sharing services without having to build or acquire their own network or service offering to do so, as companies including Ford, GM and others are currently attempting to do.
