When John Maynard Keynes predicted in 1930 that we would all be working 15-hour weeks in a hundred years’ time, he worried it might prompt a collective nervous breakdown. “I think with dread of the readjustment of the habits and instincts of the ordinary man, bred into him for countless generations, which he may be asked to discard within a few decades,” he said.
